Chandratal — the Moon Lake — is the ultimate payoff of a Spiti Valley journey. At 4,270 m, its crescent of brilliant blue water is one of the most photographed landscapes in India. But getting there safely, and fully enjoying it, requires a strategic stop. That stop is Batal — where Samsara Camps is located, just 14 km from the lake.
Batal: Your Acclimatisation Base at 3,900 m
Samsara Camps sits at Batal, Manali–Kaza Road, Lahaul & Spiti, at approximately 3,900 m (12,800 ft). This makes it the ideal acclimatisation altitude before ascending to Chandratal at 4,270 m. One night here dramatically reduces your risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) — headaches, nausea, fatigue.
Batal is also naturally sheltered and warmer than Chandratal — particularly important in the shoulder months of May, June, September, and October when Chandratal nights can drop below freezing. A good night's sleep at Batal means you arrive at the lake rested and healthy.
Route 1: From Manali to Chandratal via Batal
• Manali → Atal Tunnel → Gramphu → Batal (Samsara Camps): ~115 km, 5–6 hrs
• After crossing Rohtang/Atal Tunnel and the high Spiti plateau, your body needs recovery
• Batal is the first proper camp/stay on the Manali side — arriving here prevents rushing to Chandratal overtired
• Day 2: Guided day tour from Batal to Chandratal (~14 km, 30–45 mins drive)
Route 2: From Kaza to Chandratal via Batal
• Kaza → Losar → Batal (Samsara Camps): ~65 km, ~2.5 hrs via NH-505
• Though Kaza is also at altitude (~3,800 m), Batal provides a different environment and a restocking point
• One night at Batal before the final ascent to Chandratal (4,270 m) gives your body the best preparation
Batal vs. Chandratal: Temperature Comparison
• July–August: Batal is 2–4°C warmer than Chandratal overnight
