Big news for travelers and adventure-seekers! The scenic road from Manali to Chandratal and beyond into the breathtaking Spiti Valley through Kunzum Pass is now open for the 2025 season. As of May 25, 2025, the challenging Kunzum Pass has been announced open, providing access to India's most beautiful high-altitude traveler destination.
Current Road Status: 4x4 Vehicles Only
First, the Kaza-Gramphu road, including Kunzum Pass, is accessible only for 4x4 vehicles. This is a general restriction during the first opening because of snow clearance operations and the tough terrain. Not many 4x4 vehicles have managed to travel this newly opened road from the Spiti side to Manali.
Full Accessibility Expected Soon
Tourists willing to visit the Spiti Valley by motorbikes or in normal vehicles can expect an opening for all sorts of vehicles in about two weeks' time. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working assiduously to complete the route in a completely motorable form. Traditionally, the pass is opened for all vehicles between late May and early June, subject to weather and road conditions. This year, due to favorable climatic conditions and effective clearance work by the BRO, the pass has opened a little earlier than before.
A Glimpse into Kunzum Pass
Standing tall at an elevation of 4,551 meters (14,931 feet), the Kunzum Pass is an important gateway to the isolated Spiti Valley linking it with the Lahaul Valley. This high mountain pass is closed for much of the year, normally between November and May, owing to heavy snowfall and bad weather.
The ideal period to visit Kunzum Pass is usually from June to September when the roads are less congested, and temperatures vary from 1 to 12 degrees Celsius. Apart from its difficult roads and stunning vistas, Kunzum Pass also has the sacred Kunzum Devi Temple, a tiny but holy temple in honor of Goddess Durga, which is said to guard travelers. Most travelers make a halt here to take blessings before proceeding.
The Manali to Chandratal and Kunzum Pass route is a dream for trekkers, road trip enthusiasts, and high-altitude adventurers, offering an unforgettable experience through the Trans-Himalayan region.
