Often called 'Little Tibet,' Spiti Valley is a high-altitude cold desert tucked in the Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh. Ancient Buddhist monasteries, turquoise high-altitude lakes, and razor-sharp mountain landscapes combine to create a journey unlike any other in India.
Your best base for western Spiti and Chandratal Lake is Samsara Camps at Batal — 14 km from the Moon Lake, at 3,900 m altitude on the Manali–Kaza Road.
1. Chandratal Lake (Moon Lake)
The crescent-shaped Chandratal Lake at ~4,270 m is Spiti's crown jewel. Crystal-blue waters mirror snow-capped peaks in an almost hallucinatory tableau. Samsara Camps at Batal is the closest comfortable base — 14 km away — and we arrange guided day tours for guests.
2. Discover Ancient Monasteries
• Key Monastery (Kye Gompa) — perched dramatically on a hilltop above the Spiti River
• Tabo Monastery — one of the oldest continuously operating monasteries in the Himalayas; UNESCO listed for its murals
• Dhankar Monastery — precariously perched on a cliff at the Spiti–Pin river confluence
3. Send a Postcard from Hikkim (World's Highest Post Office)
At 4,400 m (14,567 ft), Hikkim's post office has been operational since 1983. Send a postcard home — it's a Spiti rite of passage.
4. Fossil Hunting in Langza Village
Langza is known as the 'Fossil Village' for the marine fossils found throughout its hillsides — evidence that this was once a seabed. Don't miss the giant Buddha statue with Milky Way night shots.
5. High-Altitude Villages: Komik, Kibber & Langza
• Komik — one of the world's highest motorable villages; Tangyud Monastery
• Kibber — yak safaris through high-altitude grasslands
• Langza — fossils and the iconic Buddha statue
6. Pin Valley National Park
Home to snow leopards, ibex, and red fox. Pin Valley offers some of the most remote trekking in India.
7. Trekking to Dhankar & Suraj Tal
Several short treks lead to stunning high-altitude lakes. Dhankar Lake is a 1–2 hr walk from the monastery. Suraj Tal (Lake of the Sun God) is more demanding but spectacular.
8. Gue Village Mummy
A naturally preserved Buddhist monk mummy in the small village of Gue — eerie and fascinating in equal measure.
